What Happened? I joined a group responding to the killing of a local activist. The organization was informal, emotionally charged, and lacked clear onboarding agreements. I later realized that short-term emotions, while valid, aren’t always the best foundation for long-term problem-solving. Trauma can catalyze action, but without structure, it can also lead to confusion, burnout, or even harm.
What would you like to see happen? (1) Better Enrolling and Organizing of Members. (2) Use pre-disclosed and organized onboarding processes that introduce people to the group’s mission, values, and expectations. (3) Provide clear roles, responsibilities, and pathways for involvement. (4) Develop mutual agreements that define how people will communicate, make decisions, and resolve conflict.
How do you think others can help? Others can help by ensuring that communication agreements are consensus-driven and not just handed down by a few organizers.
