Recently, in the apartment building where I live, a woman tragically died on the stairwell. She was following an announcement to evacuate using the stairs. It has since been learned that she would have been safer had she remained in her apartment. This loss highlights a dangerous gap in emergency communication and safety procedures in high-rise buildings.
What would you like to see happen?
I want to see dedicated safety personnel on the premises of every high-rise apartment building. Their role would be to check smoke and fire threats directly and provide accurate, situation-specific safety directions. This is especially urgent for my building at 1410 Washington Blvd. in Detroit, MI, where residents deserve clear, trustworthy guidance in emergencies.
How do you think others can help?
Tenants and community members can help by organizing together. We need to form or join groups that stand against poor service and retaliation from property managers and owners. Collective action is the best way to demand accountability, improve safety standards, and ensure that tragedies like this do not happen again.
