International Traveler Answers 3

What happened to you? During a trip to Mexico, my husband and I both got sick from the same meal. I had bought traveler’s medical insurance, so my hospital treatment was fully covered. My husband didn’t buy coverage, and his bill came to $6,500, and we learned you can’t leave the country until the bill is paid in full. It was a stressful and expensive situation that could have been avoided with basic travelers’ medical insurance.
What would you like to see happen? I’d like more people to understand how important it is to buy traveler’s medical insurance when visiting countries outside the U.S. (2) Promote Affordable Coverage Options. (3) Travelers should know that low‑cost plans exist and can prevent massive financial hardship. (4) Normalize Travel Insurance as a Standard Step: Just like packing a passport, buying medical coverage should be part of every international trip.
How do you think others can help? Others can help by educating travelers about the importance of medical coverage abroad and encouraging people to plan ahead. Sharing real stories and promoting accessible insurance options can prevent others from facing the same financial and emotional stress.
